Responding to Disclosures

Receiving a disclosure of any kind of mistreatment can be a stressful experience for both the person receiving the disclosure as well as the person making the disclosure. It is important to respond to a disclosure sensitively and with no judgement. You can support the individual by listening and providing them with available resources they may take advantage of.

When someone discloses they have been impacted by sexual misconduct, remember SILVER:

  • Safety – If active call UNMPD immediately
  • Inform of your role as a responsible employee
  • Listen without judgment
  • Validate feelings and reactions
  • Empower with choices
  • Refer and Report
